basic.’s first annual camp craft is a workshop series led by local makers and artists.

our hope is to inspire creativity and play for grown ups while sharing the skill, talent, and knowledge of our community.

*these workshops are recommended for adults, but email us if you want to request an exception for someone younger.

  • july 11th, linen shorts masterclass with julie maeseele

    july 11th, 9am to 3pm— make your own JM linen shorts with julie maeseele

    workshop details: students will take an in-person sewing masterclass at Julie’s studio in cahaba heights. you will learn how to make your customized JM shorts in black or white linen, and you will leave this workshop with a finished pair of shorts + a paper pattern for future use.

    available spaces: 4 (if more people show interest, we will open up another session)

    cost to participate: $275

    difficulty level: beginner, but basic sewing knowledge is recommended

    materials required: bring your own sewing machine

  • july 22nd, hand made envelope clutch with talaya champion

    july 22nd, 10am to 11am— make a medium sized envelope clutch with talaya champion

    workshop details: we will be making a medium sized no-sew envelope clutch. attendees should bring a sharp pair of scissors. activity should take 1hr (possibly less for crafty people).

  • august 12th, paper making with courtney pigford

    august 12th, 10am to noon— hand paper making with courtney pigford 

    paper making workshop details: students will be led through the process of forming sheets of paper from cotton and abaca pulp, and pressing and drying their sheets. the fiber used will be pre-beaten into pulp and ready to use. students may bring embellishments to add to their paper such as confetti, dried flowers, etc. paper may need to dry overnight, so students can come back later in the week to retrieve their paper, or leave a self addressed large envelope and $5 for shipping.
